Self-learning modules in college algebra / Maria Linda Cruza-Cataylo

Abstract / Excerpt:

Methodology: This study used the Pretest/Posttest Non-equivalent control group design.
Conclusions: (1) There is a significant difference in the academic achievement of students in college algebra as shown by the mean gain scores of the experimental and the control groups. This means that, students who used the self-learning modules (SLM) attained higher academic achievement in college algebra than those who were taught using the traditional lecture method. (2) There is no significant difference in the attitude of students towards college algebra as shown by the pretest overall mean attitude in both the experimental and the control groups. This means that, students in the experimental and control group showed the same attitude towards college algebra before the conduct of the study. (3) There is no significant difference in the attitude of students towards college algebra as shown by the posttest over-all mean attitude of the experimental and the control groups. It can be said therefore, that the attitude of students towards college algebra is not dependent on the teaching method.
