Abstract / Excerpt:
Objectives: (1) present the knowledge and perceptions of selected social science students on globalization in terms of its consequences on different sectors; (2) to show the stand of the students on selected issues regarding globalization.
Methodology: This is a descriptive type of study.
Findings: Most of the respondents ranged from 18-20 yrs. of age. The respondents were composed mostly of Economics and Political Science students. The rest were Social Work, Sociology, and Psychology majors. The respondent's description of globalization, deregulation, privatization, and trade liberalization did not go far from the textbook definitions. However, a significant percentage of the respondents mostly coming from the Political Science program linked globalization to monopoly and imperialism. More view globalization positively. They cited the cooperation among nations would pave the way to progress and development. The free market will lean towards efficiency on production leading to wider choices at competitive prices. Those who were not in favor of globalization pointed out the inequality in benefits. Distribution of the positive results may be concentrated to a few particularly to the industrialized countries. Others are apprehensive saying provisions must be clear enough to serve as guidelines toward implementation with consideration to all aspects not just to the economy. Most of these respondents say the Philippines is not ready to engage in free trade in global level.
