Nurse Talk: linguistic approaches and patients’ responsiveness

Abstract / Excerpt:

This study aimed to describe the liguistic approaches of the nurses and to see whether these approaches elicited positive or negative response from the patients in the rehabilitation setting. This study was anchored from Howard Giles' theory of Communication Accommodation Theory. Under this theory was the two linguistic approaches, convergence and divergence. The researchers used different methods in collecting the data such as observing the actual interaction between the nurses and their patients, interviewing the nurses, and conducting a focused group discussion. The researchers arrived at different themes under linguistic approaches and patients' responsiveness. On linguistic approaches, the themes are slow rate of speech, fast rate of speech, tag questions, soft tone of voice, broad statements, repetition, clarification, and politeness under the Convergence linguistic approach, fast rate of speech, firm tone of voice, presenting reality, and topic change under Divergence linguistic approach. While on patients' responsiveness, the themes are answering the question and acquiesce for patients' positive responsiveness, refusal,disagree, and silence for patients' negative responsiveness.
