Incidence infection among breastfed neonates born in Davao Oriental Provincial Hospital

Abstract / Excerpt:

Objectives: The purpose of the study was to follo-up the health status of the breastfed neonates born in March and April 1990 in Davao Oriental Provincial Hospital. It answers: (1) Were there infections that occured among the breastfed neonates born in Davao Oriental Provincial Hospital? (2) What were the specific infections that occured? (3) Is there a relation between the manner of feeding and the occurence of infections in neonates? (4) is the occurence of infection related to the neonates, 4.1) birth weight, and 4.2) age in months? (5) Is the occurence of infection related to the mothers', 5.1) age, 5.2) education, 5.3) Number of pregnancies, and 5.4) family economic status?
Methodology: The descriptive method with statistical approaches was used in this study.
Conclusions: (1) There are infections occuring among neonates born in Davao Oriental Provincial Hospital. (2) The infections occuring among the neonates born in Davao Oriental Provincial Hospital were respiratory tract infections, gastro-intestinal tract infections and other infections including: skin rashes, skin erruptions with pustules, redness of the eyes and ear discharges. (3) Breasfeedign is a better manner of feeding neonates if infections are to be minimized, and growth and development are to be insured. (4.1) Infections occur regardless of the body size of the neonates, small or big. (4.2) Infections occur more when the neonates are still very young (one month old) and less as they grow older. (5) With the present trend of neonatal care adapted by the hospital, infections are possible; thus, neonatal health status is at risk.
