Effectiveness of school intervention to teachers’ absenteeism

Abstract / Excerpt:

The present study aimed to provide results on the effectiveness of the management enterventions to reduce teachers' absenteeism. It intended to provide valuable information to be used as basis for planning strategies to combat absenteeism and to look into the welfare of the college faculty members - an important resource in an educational institution. It made use of the interactionist perspective in analyzing relational data like absenteeism and interventions (Smithikrai, 2008). The present study made use of the descriptive and qualitative method of research since it dealt with the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. The independent variables are no intervention, first (1st) intervention and second (2nd) intervention while the dependent variables is teachers' absenteeism. The results of the present study revealed the following: first, that there is no significant difference on the absences of the college faculty members between no intervention and first intervention, second, that there is no significant difference on the absences of the college faculty members between no intervention and second intervention, and third, that there is no significant difference on the absences of the college faculty members between first intervention and second intervention. Presenting the highlights of the results of the survey, the representative college faculty members gave their own ideas, comments and reactions during the in-depth interview. The in-depth interviews revealed that the intervention is weak, as expressed by the college faculty members. Other factors that contributed to absenteeism are also discussed. Interventions to reduce absences among college faculty members are confronted with challenges on its effectiveness. It is complicated to measure its effectiveness because there are many other factors to consider. Recommendations are discussed through an action plan.
