Coffee-milk: Interracial relationships in Davao City

Abstract / Excerpt:

This study explored the different experiences of interracial relationship between a Filipino and a foreigner that are residing here in Davao City. This includes the different perceptions of their family, friends and the society in the perspective of the interracial couple as well as thee the different problems encountered by the couples and their different coping mechanisms when they are faced problems. This study was descriptive in nature. Qualitative data were collected using in-depth interview with fifteen couples who served as respondents. The result of this study shows that respondents experience prejudices and discrimination in one way or another from external factors. The respondents also identify problems that they think are cultural in nature like language barrier, clash of cultural beliefs and practices, and stereotyping issues from the public. The study recommends many things like learning of the English language for people who are engaged in an interracial relationship, incorporation of cultural diversity and foreign culture appreciation in the academes, equal treatment of foreigners and Filipinos alike in commercial establishments, the conclusion of the concept of acculturation for future researchers, and the expansion of the locale of the study for future researchers.
