IDP afflicted youth: Experiences and effects of post-displacement education

Abstract / Excerpt:

This study centered on the experiences of IDP and afflicted youths of the J. Marquez School of Peace in Cotabato City during and after displacement and how these experiences had affected them and most importantly their education. The study also looked into the interventions provided by the government and International Organizations and how these assistances motivated the behavior and attitude of the respondents to continue their studies despite their circumstance. Focus Group Discussions and ln-depth interviews were utilized as the instrumentations and Kurt Lewin's theory on Force Field Analysis provided the backbone for this research study.Traumatic stress, an educational halt, and lesser class attendance in school were mostly the effects of conflict on the respondents. Fear of death and fear of being caught in crossfires were the constant variables during and even after the displacement. The outstanding support system (i.e. parents, friends, and teachers) of the youths primarily helped them to get through the tough condition they were in. Furthermore, the logistical and material assistance provided by the local government and humanitarian international organizations helped alleviate the difficulties that the youths have faced with regard to their post-displacement education. This study recommends that the national, regional and local governments and concerned humanitarian organizations address the actual needs of the conflict-afflicted youths in Cotabato City and administer policies on post-traumatic stress management. The youth are called to continue petitioning support from their local leaders to provide security and development especially on educational rights. The proponents of this research also find it essential that the unfortunate situations of conflict-afflicted youths be made known to everyone to pave the way for social awareness leading to the recognition of social responsibility and humanitarian assistance among peoples.
