Abstract / Excerpt:
Using the qualitative-participatory paradigm in research, this study explores general views and experiences among Agusanon Manobo of Barangay Consuelo, Agusan Del Sur with regards to mining in their locality. Drawn from focus group discussions and key informant interviews, informants' narratives reveal generally positive views on mining. Moreover, their implicit agreeability on the ongoing mining operation in their area could be attributed to the productive community outreach programs by the mining company. Likewise, informants' narratives highlight other interesting themes such as on royalties, which some of them believed to have caused conflict and eventually factions among tribal groups. As one of the implications, this study proposes a more sustainable planning and intensive information dissemination on the hazards as well as sustainability of mining in Consuelo, Bunawan.
