Abstract / Excerpt:
This study looks at power struggle as presented in ten selected fairy tales. Theses tales were chosen due to their popularity among readers. This study also looks into how the characters oppose each other in order to attain power, how the situations that lead to conflict come about and how each are resolved. The researchers conducted this study taking inspiration from three theorists (Edwin Hoernle, Ernst Bloch and Walter Benjamin) who studied the seeds of struggle in fairy tales. Chapter I lays down the ground work for the whole study. It discusses the struggle for power and dominance found in fairy tales. The parameters are then set: ten fairy tales are to be studied intensely and read carefully so as to reveal the situations of struggle embedded in them. Chapter II talks about the principles of Karl Marx intertwining with the evolution of the fairy tale genre. The conceptual framework uses different dialectical dynamics to validate the existence of struggle. Chapter III represents the procedures, by which the study was conducted. Chapter IV is divided into three main subtopics each concentrating on the different aspects of power struggle, from the characters to the types of situations leading to conflict and their resolutions. The heroes and heroines belonging to the tales falls under different classified, they are all, in some way or another involved in a struggle. Four types of situations leading to the struggle are mentioned. These four types of situations leading to the struggle are mentioned. These four manifest themselves in varying degrees in each of the selected fairy tales. Chapter V summarizes all the important points and suggests other ways of exploring fairy tales.
