Tenurial arrangements and forest resource management in Haliap, Kiangan, Ifugao, Northern Philippines

Abstract / Excerpt:

Objectives: This study seeks to determine the impact of market economy, new technology, internal and external population pressure, and the imposition of statutory laws and policies, on Ifugao traditional resource tenure amd forest resource management system.
Methodology: A case study approach was employed in this research.
Conclusions: Barangay Haliap was settled towards the end of 19th century by the migrating Ayangan-Ifugaos who hailed from as far as Mayaoyao, Ifugao. The ancestors of the present village residents were hunters and farmers (terrace builders and swiddeners), subsistence activities which have persisted and are reflected in the resulting landscape those settlers have carved from the virgin forests they once found in the course of migration. Today, the production system of the village includes the management of individually owned forests, swidden areas, terraced pond fields, raising many domesticates in homegardens, bean gradening, and raising of livestocks. The residents main source of cash are from the sale of muyong and nakopihan products such as coffee, lumber, fruits, and lately beans. Crops raised in the payoh and inuma-an are primarily for home consumption.
