Abstract / Excerpt:

Abstract: The study was done to determine the effects of teaching through problem solving on the performance in mathematics of grade IV pupils of Malatab Elementary School for the school year 2002-2003. All 74 grade IV pupils were the respondents. The NDT was used as the baseline of the study where not one of the 74 pupils got 75% level of performance. Intervention was introduced to improve the teacher's approaches in teaching problem solving. The teachers introduced the class for two weeks. The findings of this study showed difference. The result in post-test is significantly higher than the pre-test. Hence, the use of teaching through problem solving approach is effective. These findings lead to the conclusion that teaching through problem solving improved the performance of grade IV pupils. (1) teaching through problem solving could be introduced in all grades, and in other schools in the district. (2) Teachers could improve the pupil's performance in Mathematics teaching through problem solving. (3) It is highly recommended that similar study on the use of authentic assessment in problem solving will be conducted at Malatab Elementary School.
