Abstract / Excerpt:
Everybody wants to have a society free from discrimination. But despite the struggle to obtain acceptance and equality in the society, discrimination still persists. One of the sectors experiencing discrimination is the LGBT Community. There have already been a lot of studies with regard to discrimination against the LGBT Community but there has been no study that documented the discrimination experiences of the LGBT members within their group. This study looked into the context of discrimination happening within the Ateneo LGBT Community. This is a descriptive research based on the discrimination experiences of the Ateneo LGBT within their community. The respondents of the study are at least 18 years of age and are currently enrolled or working in the Ateneo de Davao Jacinto Campus during the conduct of the study. There are a total of 33 LGBT respondents - 10 gays, 10 bisexuals, 10 transgenders and 3lesbians who underwent the in-depth interview which was based on the objectives of the study. Results of this study show that the LGBT Community experience discrimination not only outside their community but also within their Community. The most common type of discrimination they experience are verbal in nature. Most of the perpetrators have verbally discriminated members of the LGBT Community and have prejudiced them. On the other hand, most of the aggrieved party have experienced verbal discrimination in the form of blackmail, backstab, bullying and trash talk. This study recommends that there should be policies against discrimination. Structural representation from the LGBT Community will also be of help in order for the government to address their needs. Also, the government should allocate funds for this sector to empower them more. Furthermore, there should be additional forums on sexual orientation and gender identity not only to the LGBT Community but to the other members of the society as well.
