Higher order thinking skills (HOTS) in reading

Abstract / Excerpt:

ABSTRACT: THE PROBLEM: This study sought to find the effect of the development of Higher Education Thinking Skills (HOTS) in English on the students' achievement. Specifically, it aimed to answer this question: Is there a significant difference in the mean gain scores in reading between the control and the experimental group. FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study showed that there was a significant difference between the performance of students compared to those who were using the traditional methods. This finding led to the conclusion that there is a significant difference in the mean gain scores in Reading of the Experimental and the control group . Thus, the use of Instructional Modules in Reading to develop Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is an effective strategy in teaching English. RECOMMENATIONS: As a result of this study, it is recommended that: 1) The result of this study serve as a challenge and guide for school administrators to encourage other subject area teacher to use HOTS as a teaching strategy in improving students' performance. Through this study teachers could also design plans and use strategies that are differentiated, rather than traditional. 2). since thinking skills require large amount of time in order to be effective, administrative support and school wide commitment are necessary for the success of the program. 3) Similar studies be conducted using other subject areas of concentration. 4) Similar studies be conducted using other groupd of students. 5) Other teaching strategies be tested in other related studies.
