Profile and conditions of employment of female household helpers in Davao City

Abstract / Excerpt:

Objectives: This study sought to determine the profile and conditions of employment of female household helpers in Davao City.
Methodology: The study made use of the non-experimental design to collect descriptive information about the respondents.
Summary of Findings: Socio-demographic Characteristics. Half of the respondents belonged to the 15-19 age bracket. The average age was 21.4 with a range of 13 to 51. A great majority of the respondents(94%) were single. The respondents were generally literate. More than half of them(56%) reached high school. Half of the respondents knew hairstyling and manicuring while 38 percent of them knew how to cook or how to sew. About three-fifths of the respondents(58%) had singing ability while about half of them(49%) knew how to dance. Most of the resopondents' fathers worked as farmeres while thier mothres were known to be unemployed. The greatest percentage of the respondents' families(44%) were from Davao del Sure. More than fifths of the respondents' families(61%) have not migrated. There wre some 16 percent who migrated once while 14 percent migrated twice. Economic Characteristics. The average number of famiy memebrs contributing to the family income was 2 ranging from 1 to 7. On the otehr hand, the numebr of family memrbes without income exceeded those who had income. The average was 3.62 ranging from 0 to 13. The average dependency burden ratio was 1.2 with a range of 0.1 to 5. The average monthly income of the respondents' families was P1,805.53 which is way below the poevrty threshold of P5,600 for the family of six (IBON Facts and Figures). The averagemonthly expenditure of the respondents' families was P1,778.125 ranging from P100 to P200. Forty-three percent of the respondents do not have savings at all. The top three acquired possessions of the respondents were clothes(86%), shoes(67%), and jewelry(27%). Employment History. the largest proportion of the respondents(67%) started working at the age bracket of 15 to 19. The average was 17.02 with a range of 11 to 39. Prior to being a household helper, twenty-four percent of the respondents worked as domestic helpers for 3-4 years while 27 percent of them had not reached one year.
