Professional competency in nursing instruction and practice

Abstract / Excerpt:

The study utilized the descriptive correlational research design to determine the professional competency in nursing instruction and practice. the key areas of responsibility and core competencies of the standards for nursing practice in the Philippines was utilized as the questionnaire in order to establish the extent of provision in the curriculum, level of instructions in the components of the educational process, extent of performance in the clinical area, and difference in terms of provision and performance. The competencies were grouped according to knowledge, skills, and attitudes/values to establish correlation between instruction and performance. Using purposive cluster sampling technique 91 staff nurses from San Pedro hospital and Brokenshire hospital, 156 clinical instructors and 497 student nurses from San Pedro College and Brokenshire College were the respondents of the study. Results of the study revealed a very good extent of provision in the nursing curriculum on safe and quality nursing care, management of resources and environment, legal responsibility, quality improvement, research, records management,communication, and collaboration and teamwork. The weighted mean determined the level of instructions in the components of the educational process of which the highest mean results was noted in the substantive dimensions of clinical instructors, and in the procedural dimensions of the student nurses. As to performance in the clinical area, ethico-moral responsibility emerged with the highest extent and research with lowest extent. The ANOVA yielded significant difference in terms of provision in safe and quality nursing care, health education, personal and professional development, records management, communication, collaboration and teamwork though performance in the clinical area are not significant.
