Abstract / Excerpt:
From October - November 2003, a descriptive study was conducted in Davao City to determine the factors that affect condom use among high risks groups to HIV/AIDS. A total of 120 respondents from four (4) high risks groups were covered namely, the Registered Female Sex Workers (RFSWs), Freelance Female Sex Workers (FLSWs), Clients of Female Sex Worker (CFSWs) and Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM). Samples of RFSWs were chosen using stratified simple random sampling while the three other high risk groups were identified using the snowball technique. Data were collected by personal interview using a structured interview schedule, key informant interview and focus group discussion. The high risks groups were mostly young, single and had not been to college. Financial problem and peer influence surfaced as the most common motivations for being in the sex trade among the female sex workers and male high risks groups. Only 43% of high risks groups always used condoms. These findings suggest the following recommendations: a) require sex establishments to conduct assertive condom promotion activities, to provide a condom corner and to provide healthy working environment for female sex workers; b). intensification of HIV/AIDS education programs among young high risks groups through training of condom negotiation which should focus on the CFSW, particularly those with blue collar jobs; c.) conduct research on condom use on a wider scale and on the sexual exposure of young students and out of school youth, including ethnographic surveys on child prostitutes; and d) integration in the curriculum of a comprehensive sex education program to heighten awareness of responsible management of sexuality and full control of personal health in relation to HIV/AIDS prevention. Findings also suggests conduction an evaluation study on the appropriateness and effectiveness of existing HIV?AIDS prevention programs in Davao City.
