Philippines soap operas: selected women viewers’ perceived concept of reality

Abstract / Excerpt:

There had been a number of researches that investigated the different effects of exposure to television. This study was then conducted in order to determine if exposure to Philippine soap operas has a significant relationship to viewers' perceived concept of reality. Specifically, this research aimed in identifying the significant difference of the level of exposure and their perceived concept of reality in terms of age, economic status and educational attainment of women viewers residing in NHA Buhangin. Socio-demographic profiles were also gathered. To gather the needed data, a survey questionnaire was used. Simple frequencies and weighted means were computed to analyze the answers of the participants. The result showed that the respondents agreed that exposure to Philippine soap opera indeed has a significant and negative relationship with the viewers' perceived concept of reality. This in turn strengthens the need for people behind soap opera programs to be objective in presenting characters and stories that may influence the viewers. As stated from literatures, these findings clearly emphasize the need for television companies to produce more educational Programs. Furthermore, television writers can give more attention to programs that promote development.
