Abstract / Excerpt:
Abstract: This study focuses on the effect of multimedia medium of instruction in enhancing the students' academic performance in Trigonometry and their attitudes towards Mathematics in general. Specifically, the study attempts to answer the following questions: 1. Is there are significant difference in the mean gain scores of students exposed to multimedia medium of instruction from those exposed to the lecture method in terms of the following domains: a. Cognitive b. Affective? 2. Is there a significant correlation between the gain scores of the experimental and control groups in Trigonometry and their attitude towards mathematics in general? A quasi-experimtal design called pretest-posttest is used in this study. Pertinent data are obtained from the two sets of questionnaires namely, the pretest-posttest and the attitudinnaire. A total of 100 fourth year students from a heterogeneous class of Andres Soriano College for school year 2004-2005 are involved in this study. there are 50 students for the experimental group and 50 students also for the Control group. This study uses the following statistical tools namely the t-test for independent samples and the Pearson-r for the correlation. The findings and conclusions derived from the study are as follows: 1. There is a significant difference in the domain between the group of studnets exposed to multimedia medium of instruction and those exposed to lecture method in Trigonometry as measured by the mean gain scores but there is no significant difference in the attitude of the students towards the strategy used in teaching. 2. There is a significantly very weak correlation in the gain scores fo the experimental and control groups in Trigonometry and their attitude towards Mathematics in general. On the basis of the foregoing findings and conclusions, the following recommendations are presented: 1. Multimedia medium of instruction must be at the beginning of the school year or during the first quarter. 2. The principal should closely monitor or supervise the
