Lecture demonstration : its effect on student’s performance in college physics

Abstract / Excerpt:

Abstract: This study was conducted to determine the effect of lecture demonstrations on students' performance in College Physics. Two sections, each consisting of 30 second year students who were taking College Physics II, were chosen from among three sections enrolled in the College of Engineering at Notre Dame University, Cotabato City as the subjects of the study. One section was randomly assigned to have the lecture demonstrations. The College Physics achievement was given as pretest to all respondents. The study lasted for twelve weeks and ended with a posttest using the same intruments used in the pretest. The t-test was used in the analysis of all pretest results. The same analysis was used for the mean gain scores whose pretest analysis resulted to a non-significant difference among the two groups. The major finding of the study is that lecture demonstration significantly affect students' performance in College Physics. This finding led to the conclusion that lecture demonstration improve students' performance in College Physics. Based on the result of the study, the following recommendations are presented: (1) Since lecture demonstration have positive effect on students' performance in College Physics, Physics Teachers are encouraged to employ the strategy especially when introducing concepts that are difficult to visualize. (2) A similar study be made to determine the effect of lecture demonstration on students' attitude in Physics. Since attitude do not change in a short period of time, the study may be done in a longer duration to obtain more precise effect. (3) Physics demonstration be prepared, compiled and made available for Physics teachers.
