Abstract / Excerpt:
Abstract: This study focuses on students' learning styles and achievement in College algebra. Specifically, the study attempts to the answer the following questions: 1. What is the prefered learning styles of the students on college algebra classes? 2. Is there a significant differences in the achievement of students in College Algebra among colleges? 3. Is there significant relationship between the students achievement in College Algebra and the degree of their prefered learning styles? The descriptive-comparative correlational method of research is used in this study. pertinent data are obtained from the two sets of questionnaires namely, learning styles inventory and the departmental examination in College algebra. A total of 221 students of the University of Mindanao enrolled in College Algebra in the second semester school year 2003-2004 are involved in this study whereby 67 are from the College of Business and Management, 22 from the College of Arts and Sciences, 44 from the College of Nursing, and 88 are from the College of Criminology. This study uses the following statistical tools: 1. Frequency distribution and Percentage 2. ANOVA, 3. Duncan Multiple Range Test, and 4) Pearson r. The findings and conclusions derived from the study are as follows: 1. The preferred learning style of students in College Algebra during the second semester, first semester, school year 2003-2004 of the University of Mindanao, Davao City is visual. 2. There is significant difference in the achievement of students in College algebra among the four colleges. College of Business and Management and College of Criminology differed significantly in the departmental examination in College Algebra in the University of mindanao, Davoa city during the second semester, first semester school year 2003-2004. 3. There is significantly weak relationship between students' achievement in College Algebra and the Degree of their preferred learning style which is the auditory and the eclectic.
On the other hand, there is a negligible relationship between students' achievement in College Algebra and the Degree of their preferred learning style which is the visual and the kinesthetic. On the basis of the foregoing findings and conclusion, the following recommendation are presented. 1. Trainings and seminar workshops should be given to teachers to enhance their capacity to handle students varied learning styles. 2. Remedial classes should be given to the students in the College of Criminology to enhance their academic achievement in College Algebra since they got the lowest mean score among the other colleges in the departmental examination. 3. This study concerned only on the learning styles and achievement of the students in College Algebra. It is therefore, recommended that further studies be conducted covering the three variables; Learning styles, Teaching strategies, and Achievements.
