Abstract / Excerpt:
Objectives: Determine the (1) socio-demographic background of the working children in selected banana production-related industries in Davao del Sur; (2) working conditions of these children; (3) views of these children concerning their work circumstances and situations in the banana industries.
Methodology: The design of the study was descriptive and made use of both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection.
Summary of Findings: The distribution of respondents was predominantly male with 35 child workers and the female respondents comprised the remaining number of respondents with 25 child workers. Majority of the respondents were shredders of reject bananas. They work because they want to help their family and they want to have additional allowance for school. More than half of the working children said that there had accidents while working. Closed to half of the respondents replied that there were no accidents encountered since they started working. Majority of those who hadn't experienced illnesses due to work. Most illnesses mentioned were fever, fatigue, and even dengue. Majority of the respondents wear protective gears and gadgets. These protective gears and gadgets were gloves, hats and boots. The respondents were asked to provide reasons for not wearing protective gears and gadgets. The respondents were chiefly have plans for stopping their work. Most of their reasons were for them to concentrate more on their studies and for them to continue schooling. Some respondents complained that their work was very tiring. A large number of respondents viewed a working child as wrong. Their reasons were mostly that the child must study not work and that the child was too young for a work. Most of the respondents perceived that there were disadvantages in working for children. These advantages were the children get tired, they could not concentrate on studies and the working environment of their work as very unlikely (very hot working environment).
