Abstract / Excerpt:
Summary of Findings: Results of the study in the area of costs of child labor reveal that the effects of their work in their performance in school is relative to their economic status. The child laborers cannot submit their requirements or projects on time because they do not have enough money to buy the needed things. They are always absent or late becausde they have work to do in the wharf and also the money they get out of working motivates them from not going to school. Majority of the respondents are not pressured by their parents to work, they are the ones who decided to work for they realized that the family needs money to buy their basic needs. The results of the study in the area of rewards of child labor show that the respondents continue to work due to the rewards they get. They like their work because their friends also work in the wharf, they consider their work as play and they are often in the company of their friends. The appreciation and gratitude these child laborers parents express gives them strength to go on working. Working at a very young age has many rewards in terms of experience, maturity, enjoyment and salary as shown in table 8. Moreover, the findings of the study reveal that the rewards these child laborers get from working are greater than the costs.
