Graphical/Diagrammatical approach and the achievement of students in solving word problems.

Abstract / Excerpt:

Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of the Graphical/Diagrammatical Approach on the achievement of the students in solving word problems.
Methodology: This study made use of the quasi-experimental design called pretest-posttest non-equivalent groups design.
Conclusions: (A.1) Students who used graphical/diagrammatical approach in their learning activities achieved better performance than thos who used the 5-step algorithm in solving rate/motion problems. (A.2) Students who used graphical/diagrammatical approach in their learning activities showed the same level of performance with those students using 5-step algorithm in solving mixture problems. Thus graphical/diagrammatical approach is as effective as the 5-step algorithm in solving mixture problem as indicated by their posttest mean scores which are higher than their pretest mean scores. (A.3) Students who used graphical/diagrammatical approach in their learning activities performed better than those students who used 5-step algorithm in solving work problems. (A.4) Students who used graphical/diagrammatical approach in their learning activities performed significantly better than those students who used the 5-step algorithm in solving all three types (rate/motion,mixture, and work) of word problems.
