Abstract: The study was conducted at Kadigasan Elementary School, West Midsayap District. The purpose was to determine the effects of games and puzzles as teaching strategy on the academic performance of the tewnty-four grade IV pupils of Kadigasan Elementary School. The results of the National Diagnostic Test (NDT) were the bases of the study. The NDT was conducted by the National Educational Testing and Resource Center (NETRC) last July 3, 2002 on the following learning areas: Mathematics, Science and English. Based from the Mean Percentage Scores (MPS) of the three learning areas, Mathematics was the least learned subject. Four least learned competencies were identified which are found in the third grading period after an item analysis of the pretest was done. To increase the academic performance of the Grade IV pupils in Mathematics, an Inservice Training (INSET) on the use of games and puzzles as teaching strategy for Mathematics teachers was conducted at Kadigasan Elementary School. The grade IV teacher implemented the use of games and puzzles in his daily lesson plan for the least learned competencies. Posttest was administered using the same text booklets to the pupils who took the prestest. Results were analyzed. Results revealed that the difference on the Mean values of the pretest and the posttest scores were significant. The computed t-value is 3.198 and the tabular value is 3.182. Since the computed t-value was greater than the tabular value, the null hypothesis was rejected. The results implied that the academic performance of pupils in Mathematics IV had greatly improved with the use of games and puzzles. Conclusions and recommendations were drawn and the implication was discussed.
