Female archetypes in Korean Folklore

Abstract / Excerpt:

The female in Korean culture is a character of contrast. She has become the liberal woman according to modern standards (Parlato, 2013) but still retains the most recent influence of Cunfucian view which downgrades the females (Ven & Mason, 2014). Interestingly, when one reads Korean folklores, lots of images and ideologies about women can be seen which are female archetypes. Thus this research aims to analyze Korean folklores in regard to the female archetypes present in ti to better understand the reasons behind the view on women by Korean. The methodology used in this study is qualitative content analysis. The author first translate the text into English then analyzed the text in accordance to the research questions using the theoretical lens of Jungian archetypes and cultural feminism. Three Korean folklore, namely, "Granny Mago", "Legend of Arang", and "Lady Wol Me", from different social settings of ancient Korea were analyzed and the analyses revealed that the three different folklores showed different female archetypes which responded accordingly to their societal contexts. Furthermore, the female character's analyses also revealed how women during the ancient Korea went against the society.
