Abstract / Excerpt:
The study investigated the corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices of selected companies in Davao Region, involving 63 companies engaged in 12 different nature of business. Specifically, the study assessed the extent to which financial viability and firm competitiveness facilitate the implementation of CSR practices along the areas of protection of customers' well-being, educational assistance, entrepreneurial/agribusiness assistance, community development, and environmental stewardship. Likewise, the research examined the extent of implementation of the aforementioned CSR practices. It also assessed the relationship of the CSR practices studied on company employees' attitude, morale, and productivity, on company's product/service acceptability; on corporate image; and, on community leadership and welfare. Finally, the study determined the variables affecting the successful implementation of CSR practices. Based on the findings, the study made the following conclusions: First, conditions like financial viability and firm competitiveness has facilitated the implementations of corporate social responsibility practices. Second, With respect to the extent of implementation of CSR practices, the practice of protecting customers' well-being is regarded as the most extensively practiced; the practice of environmental care is regarded as moderately practiced with sufficient financial support and high commitment from the top management. The provisions for educational assistance, entrepreneurial/agribusiness assistance, and, community development, are fairly practiced indicating consistent yet minimal financial support and little commitment from the top management. It appears that the company respondents had fewer opportunities to be of assistance to this community.
Third, most of the CSR practices covered by the study are found to have significant relationship on company employees' attitude, morale, and productivity, company's product/service acceptability, on corporate image, and on community development and welfare. There is no sufficient evidence to prove, however, that the practice of assisting entrepreneurial/agribusiness development has significant association on company employees' attitude, moral and productivity. Similarly, the practice of promoting customers' well-being is not found to have significant relationship on community leadership leadership and welfare. Fourth, the following variables are found to be strongly associated to the successful implementation of CSR practices: top management commitment to the implementation of CSR practices, implementing policies, and the presence of concrete CSR program. The study recommends the following: A concerted effort in making the company financially viable and competitive; high concern on the practice of promoting customers' well-being be sustained; CSR practice involving social investment be enhanced and be encouraged. The study also recommends that companies interested in implement successful CSR practice consider the significance of variables strongly associated with company employees. company product/service. corporate image, and community leadership and welfare.
