College algebra achievement predictors

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to determine the predictors of college algebra achievement of students at the Davao del Norte State College. Specifically, it sought to determine the average HSmath GPA, HSGPA, and OLSAT result of students when analyzed by course, stanine category, type of high school where students came from, and their attitude towards math. This study also aimed to determine the average performance of students in college algebra and to find out if HSmath GPA, HSGPA, and OLSAT result can significantly predict students' college algebra achievement when analyzed by course, stanine category, type of high school, and attitude towards math. The study used the descriptive-predictive design. Stratified random sampling was employed involving 172 college algebra students enrolled during the first semester of the academic year 2007-2008. The data used were the HSmath GPA, HSGPA, and OLSAT result of the respondents. College algebra achievement was measured by the respondents' final department exam result in the college algebra course. A math attitude survey questionnaire was also administered to determine the respondents' attitude towards math. Regression analysis was the main statistical tool used in the study along with other descriptive measures like the mean and standard deviation. Results revealed that the college algebra performance of students was lower below average, registering a mean of 72.80. Separate regression analysis for each course, stanine category, type of high school and attitude towards math were also done. Results of the analysis revealed that from the three (3) pre-identified factors, only HSmath GPA and OLSAT result can significant predict college algebra achievement. HSGPA was not found as a significant predictor of achievement in college algebra.
