Causal attribution of children for happiness and its correlates

Abstract / Excerpt:

The causal attribution of children for happiness and its correlates were examined in a survey of 121 households (k=1) from the barangay of San Nicolas, Buhangin, Davao City. All respondents were interviewed about their concept of happiness and unhappiness by tracing it through their causal attributions, including their demographic variables such as age, gender, birth order, educational background and perceived economic status. The different causal attributions are based on the locus of causality, whether it is internal or external, on controllability, whether it can be changed or not at all across time and on stability, whether the perceived cause of happiness changes through time or not at all. Only age was signi?cantly associated with the causal dimensions of happiness. Results showed that the children's judgment of happiness and unhappiness is internally controllable. Correlation results also indicated that locus of causality is significantly associated with controllability of age. Other affects of emotions were considerably notable in shame and regret, which are more likely internal and can be attributed to their stability for happiness. Feelings of contentment, shame, and fairness are significantly associated to children's causal dimension of happiness and are internally attributed to their feelings and are stable while disgust was also found to be significantly associated with causal dimension of unhappiness controllability, which can be external and less likely to be in control.
