Abstract / Excerpt:
Five Davao City males, ages 19 to 22, participated in this explanatory study on technology-mediated interactions that put them at risk of MSM (Men having sex with men). A behavior that is implicated in the alarming increase of HIV cases in the Philippines. Results indicate that social networking website usage meet the respondents socialization needs and provide the venue for expressing self-ascribed identities. Post-network sessions abbreviate ceremonies for introduction of strangers and seem to fast track the development of social attraction, it even allows license to give and receive physical intimacies. Hence, further studies are recommended. Moreover, SNW-meditated self-disclosure, breaks down personal space, and renders virtual acquaintances receptive to face-to-face meetings.
