Abstract / Excerpt:
This study was conducted to find out if there is a correlation between students' achievement in Stoichiometry in Science and Technology III and their grades in Algebra and in Communication Skills 2. Also, to find out the profile of learning difficulties of the students in mathematically worded problems in Science and Technology III in terms of reading, comprehension, transformation, process, encoding difficulties and carelessness. Samples used in the study were 48 third year high school students enrolled during the SY 2003-2004 at the Philippine Nikkei0jin Kai School of Davao. The data were gathered using the descriptive correlational method. To identify the types of learning difficulties students encounter in mathematically worded problems in Chemistry, Newman Error Analysis Guideline (NEAG) was used. It was found that there was a significant correlation between the Math subject and the achievement in Stoichiometry but there was no significant correlation between grades in English Communication Skills 2 and the achievement in Stoichiometry. Results of the interview in learning difficulties are arranged in descending order as follows: process skill transformation, comprehension and carelessness, encoding and reading difficulty.
