A socio-economic profile of Kinawaton Small Farmers Coconut Organization (KSFCO)

Abstract / Excerpt:

Objectives: The study aims at finding out the readiness of members of KSFCO to become a cooperative and to determine the profile of KSFCO.

Methodology: Descriptive method of analysis was used in obtaining the desired data and information pertinent to the study.

Summary of Findings: Almost half of the respondents (45.7%) had no education. More than one-fourth (25.7&) had reached intermediate level and 17.5% had reached the primary level. All of the respondents were engaged in farming and in selling their farm's produce as their main source of income. Majority of the respondents were active members of KSFCO and the same percentage were always present in their monthly meetings. More than one-half of the respondents perceived that life will be better after cooperative as being established. This implies an additional income for the farmers and more loans for them to avail. If these would be properly used to increase production, then they would be able to attain their desired level of living. There were two highest strengths to KSFCO as perceived by each member to perform their duty and their willingness to undergo seminar/training about cooperative. There were certain factors as perceived by the members which hindered the KSFCO to become a cooperative. Majority of the respondents affirmed that a cooperative is one organization which provides competitive outlets through which farmers can be assured of marketing channels, while less than one-half also pointed out that a cooperative is an organization which help in developing the livelihood of its members. Based on the responses gathered the members of the KSFCO believed that if ever their organization be turned out into a cooperative their living condition would improve.
