Abstract / Excerpt:
Socio-demographic profile: An overwhelming majority (62%) or two-thirds of the respondents are male. All of the respondents were married. The largest percentage of the cultural affiliation of the respondents was 34 percent which were Ilongos. The largest percentage of the family size of the respondents fall within 3 to 4 members comprising of 28 percent. The average family size was 4.94 members. Majority of the respondents were Catholics comprising of 79 percent. The respondents were generally literate having reached at least formal education. The largest percentage of the respondents (62%) were the sole breadwinner of the family. All of the respondents have their dependents and the largest percentage (56%) indicated that their dependents where their children, wives and parents. The largest percentage of the respondents (46%) have at least 5 dependents. Economic Characteristics of the Respondents: About 34 percent of the respondents derives their income before asparagus production mainly from operating a sari-sari store, the average monthly income of the respondents was relatively low, barely P2,000 and none of the respondents had a total monthly income of more than P3,000. An overwhelming percentage of the respondents belong to the P2,000 to P2,499 income bracket comprising of 40 percent. The lowest monthly income of the respondents fall within P2,500 to P2,999 bracket. With this, it is far below the designated poverty level of P4,997 in 1991. All of the respondents were living below the poverty threshold before asparagus production. However, when the respondents engaged in asparagus production, the average monthly income has increase from roughly P2,000 to about P4,999 an astounding 250% increases. The largest percentage of the respondents had a monthly income within the P4,500 to P4,999 income bracket comprising of 38 percent while the smallest percentage of the respondents (16%) fell within P4,000 to P4,499.
