Reveals that the reading competence of the respondents is greatly affected by their language skills. The college freshmen of Notre Dame of Dadiangas College for the school year 1991-1992 are considered competent or developed in terms of reading and language competencies. They are, however, not able to reach the highest level within the degree of competence which is 40 percent to 70 percent. Thus, basic language and reading skills must be strongly reinforced in the teaching of reading and language subjects in college.
