Effect of mulching on rhizome yield of hawaiian white ginger

Annotation

Hawaiian ginger is used as test plants in determining the effects of mulching materials in the CARP-ISF Agroforestry Livelihood Project. The treatments are: 1) control of no mulch, 2) dried cococut leaves, 3) dried banana leaves, 4) grasses, a mixture of cogon and other indigenous grass species in the area. Analysis of survival and rhizome yield show a significant variation among the treatments. The unmulched treatments have the lowest average survival (87 percent) as compared to the mulched treatment with grasses (93 percent), coconut leaves (95 percent) and banana leaves (96 percent). It is, therefore, recommended that mulching ginger plantation with banana leaves, coconut leaves of mixture grasses could be adopted in similar endeavors of ginger production particularly in the CARP-ISF project areas.
