Women’s struggles in selected short stories of Filipino women writers

Abstract / Excerpt:

This paper presents and analyzes the struggles of women in the selected short stories of prominent Filipino women writers of the 20th century. It does not only show various struggles women face in a patriarchal society but also reveals how women confront their concerns and problems. The Marxist-feminist ideology which abhors the manner patriarchy or capitalism oppresses women is the foundation on which this paper rests upon. The ten short stories depict women's various struggles in a patriarchal society. Their responses also vary. Some prove themselves weak by submission to male authority while some prove themselves to be tough by questioning, protesting, and deviating form the norms and standards set by the dominant culture or patriarchy.
