Abstract / Excerpt:
Objectives: (1) document womens' experiences of economic crisis, difficulties or constraints; (2) to describe their coping mechanisms with economic crisis, difficulties or constraints in terms of a) generation of funds b) adjustments in spending c) adjustments in lifestyle (3) present some of the basic government assistance received and their perceived satisfaction from these assistance.
Methodology: The researchers employed descriptive research.
Findings: Most of the women were housewives even when they attained higher level of education than their husbands. The husbands were commonly employed as laborers. The crisis identified by the women was the insufficiency of their earnings to spend on their most basic needs. Most of the Urban poor said that they did not feel the intervention of the government except during elections when politicians would give them assistance in the form of free rice and canned goods. They wanted the government to create livelihood programs. The researchers identified sanitation as one of the problems which needs attention in the community. But it is important to note that families in the community find that as a very slight problem. They would rather have better financial opportunities than have a better comfort rooms. This goes to prove that because of poverty their basic priority is food on their tables.
