Abstract: The challenge of poverty alleviation has led the researcher to focus on the urban poor in Davao City particularly those residing Barangay Paciano Bangoy, Agdao, Davao City. With the presence of structural violence because of poverty the urban blight is so devastating where the elderly are the most vulnerable group. Thus the study aimed to know the perceptions of the urban poor in the establishment of a center for the elderly community. Moreover, the study specifically aimed to answer the sub-problems: Who are the urbgan poor in Barangay Paciano Bangoy? how do urban poor perceive the center for the elderly in their community? How do poverty, family relationship and attitudes affect the perceptions of the urban poor about the center for the elderly? The study used the descriptive-qualitative design through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with guide questions. Throught this procedure data were gathered and content analysis was used in the presentation, analysis and interpretation. The respondents showed much interest in the establishment of the center for the elderly with some apprehensions. They perceived the center to be useful if it is established at the heart of the Barangay. And it is only a place where their needs can be answered through the initiative of the center to endorse cases to government agencies such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Department of Health (DOH). Moreover, they view the center as a place with free health care services. They also wanted that the center could help the elderly develop their socio-economic and cultural life by involving them in organizing and planning and in decision making in the concerns and activities of the center. Finally the establishment of the center for the elderly is an urgent need in community development. It can lessen the burden of the members of the family in caring for their elderly. The elderly can still be productive members of the society given the right support and perspective.
