Abstract / Excerpt:
One of hte difficulties in teaching Mathematics at all levels lies in the ability of the students to grasp new concepts and to make learning more lasting. This is the primary concern for conducting this study. This paper aims to investigate the students' concept on the basic operations with fractions. The subjects of the study are the fourth year high school students, section three of arellano High School, a public school in Sta, Cruz. Forty seven (47) students were chosen for this paper. As research instruments, the teacher used three teacher-made tests and instructured interview for data collection was also conducted to support the results. After administering the tests, the mean, standard deviation and the rate of percent were utilized to describe the performance of the class. The responses for the informal interview were tallied. The results showed that the common difficulties are in addition, subtraction and division of fractions. The reason cited as obstacles were the poor concepts recall, teacher's strategy and unclear explanation, very wrong solutions and lack of concentration.
