Abstract / Excerpt:

The study looked into life and the social context of the plays of Guillermo J. Dagohoy, the only known playwright from Peñaplata, Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) during the 60s and 70s. His complete plays include only one is a linambay, two are dulang hinonihan o dulang inawitan, which is a play for entertainment purposes. Two plays are dulang kataw-anan, which is a play that includes laughter. All the rest of his plays are dulang mahinuklugon or didactic plays. The social context of the plays in parallel with the social context of Peñaplata and the country during the 60s and 70s. The decline of the popularity of Dagohoy's plays was attributed to the waning influence of the playwright and the decrease in demand for plays with the proliferation of movies and television series in the Peñaplata community. On the other hand, a contemporary audience might still find some of Guillermo J. Dagohoy's works relevant especially those that feature themes which are still relevant social issues. All of these prove the thesis of the work that the author is also a social construct and this is reflected in his works through his concerns with during the time of his works' creation and production. The plays also took part in the consolidation of power of the very same institutions that the playwright was a part of by forwarding beliefs the playwright considered important and at the same time suppressing the beliefs that threatened such power.
