The effects of media on Ateneo students’ perception of beauty

Abstract / Excerpt:

Statement of the problem : The popular media (television, movies, magazines, etc.) have, since World War II, increasingly held up a thinner and thinner body (and now ever more physically fit) image as the ideal for women. The ideal man is also presented as trim, but muscular (http:www.mediafamily.org/facts/facts_mediaeffect.shtml).

METHODOLOGY : This chapter presents the method that the group used in getting the respondents of the study, also the formula that was used for the computation of statistical data that will help the researcher come up with the results, interpretation, and conclusion.

Conclusion : This study concludes that indeed, media has a strong influence or effects to its audiences. It is a very powerful tool in communicating ideas to its audiences. One of the many ideas is beauty. People's standards of what is beautiful are according to how media presents it. To pursue beauty doesn't need to be rationalized because, just like reality, it is absolute. (Disch, 137, 1997) Furthermore, the results proved the theory that this study used which is the hypodermic needle theory. Since there is a strong relationship between media's presentation of beauty and the effects it has to the respondents' perception, the group has also concluded that the audiences are controlled by the media. They don't have the power to resist anything the media will bombard. All they can do is to give a response which, in this case, is very much in favor of the media.
