The development and testing of a leadership training programs for college students

Abstract / Excerpt:

Objectives: The first aspect of the problem is focused on the background of the program, the process of development, the theoretical basis of the choice in content, structure, and strategies employed in the implementation. The second aspect is directed at the efficacy of the program in terms of its effects on the participants relative to knowledge, The following questions were sought: (A.) On the development of the program (1) What steps and important considerations were observed in the development of the program? (2) What theoretical considerations were made of the following: a) structure and components of the program, b) choice of content for each of the components, c) choice of strategies in the implementation of each component? (B.) On testing the program (1) Are there significant difference in knowledge, attitudes, and skills between those in the control group and those in the experimental group as a result of the leadership training program? (2) What student characteristics or attributes are related to changes in knowledge, attitudes and values, and skills as a result of the training program?

Methodology: The Solomon Four Group Design was used for lack of pretest among groups in the experiment and its said strength because the demand for comparison is well satisfied. (Campbell and Stanley, 1963, Kerlinger, 1973).

Conclusions: (1) The leadership training program is effective as evidenced the results of the summative test given to the experimental and control groups. The experimental group obtained mean scores which were significant at .05 and .01 levels. (2) The leadership training program was most effective in the development of communication skills. (3) Pretesting has its strongest effect on test of attitudes and values and weakest on the area of knowledge. (4) NCEE scores, I.Q scores, and sten scores in PFactor A, outgoing, PFactor B, more intelligent and PFactor Q3 are predictive of the scores trainees may obtain from the criterion measures of the leadership training program. (5) In general, the experimental program is a more effective than the traditional program in the training of the potential student leader.
