Abstract / Excerpt:
The act of charity has seemed to transcend the bounds of making oneself available to the service of those who are in need either by the handing of alms to beggars or providing material assistance to those who have less in life either caused by natural calamities or an intentional violation of their right to live life in fulfillment. Media has now made it possible to reach out to people who need help in sustaining the wholeness of every aspect essential to their existence. It has paved the way for these people to lean on to them whenever they find themselves in times of great need to the extent that the practice of begging has now become an accepted trend on media. This study aimed to see if the six filmic elements from characters, language, music, framing of shots, theme of the day/mode of choosing contestants and the manner of gaining provisions contribute to the promotion and perpetuation of the culture of mendicancy of three selected Philippine RV game shows: Wiltime Bigtime's Kantanong, Eat Bulaga's Juan for All, All for Juan Sugod Bahay Gang and It's Showtime's Sine Mo To. Researchers have resorted to document the data obtained in a descriptive method along with the analysis of each elements.Responses of the participants in three separate focus group discussions were put into use to support the gathered data and analysis of the researchers. The researchers also consulted and applied theoretical devices such as episodic framing, hyper ritualization and Aristotle's master-servant relation to strengthen the analysis and provide a strong ground on whether each element abets in the culture of mendicancy. The principal conclusion was that most of the elements especially the characters, language and manner of gaining provisions in the three game shows contribute in the emphasis of the promotion of the culture of mendicancy.
