Abstract / Excerpt:
This study focuses on the effect of multimedia instruction in enhancing the students' academic performance as compared with the traditional lecture method. Basically, the study attempted to know which method of teaching is most effective to the academic performance of the first year college students of the Ateneo de Davao University enrolled in Psychology 111 (General Psychology), school year 2008- 2009. A Posttest Only design was used in this study. Pertinent data were obtained from a quiz, posttest. Sixty respondents from First Year Accountancy Students of a heterogeneous class of the Ateneo de Davao University for school year 2008-2009 were involved in this study. Thirty randomly selected respondents for both Traditional Lecture Method Group and Multimedia Instruction Group. The findings based on the performance of the respondents in Psy 111 during the prelim grading period showed that those who came from private schools performed better than those coming from public high schools. The performance of the respondents was also affected by their living arrangements. It showed that those living in their houses perform better than those staying in dormitories. On the basis of the foregoing findings, the following recommendations were given: 1) Multimedia instruction and Traditional teaching method should be balanced as an educational tool for teaching strategy in order for the students to be globally competitive; 2) There is a need to improve and develop Multimedia Instruction since it has a comparable effect with the Traditional teaching method; 3) It is also recommended that the similar study using a larger sample population from different colleges to find out what is more effective to the academic performance of the students; 4)A pretest-protest design should be conducted to get the mean gain score to know the effectiveness of MMI to the academic performance of the students; 5) Explore other teaching strategies that can help improve the skills and academic performance of the students; and 6) Consider other factors and implications that might affect the students' performance during the treatment period.
