Teachers’ aptitude and teaching performance in the secondary level

Abstract / Excerpt:

This sudy attempted to answer the ultimate problem whether the hiring tests given by Ateneo de Davao High School to its teacher-applicants could significantly correlate the future performance of these teachers when they teach at the Ateneo de Davao High School. The following were the findings of the study: Firstly, among the five groups - a) all probationary teachers, b) teachers with education degree, c) teachers with non-education degree, d) male probationary teachers and e) female probationary teachers - only the teachers with non-education degree group got an average in teaching aptitude while the rest got low average. Secondly, the scores of the teachers with education and non-education degree groups in the verbal and non-verbal IQ are not significantly different. However, there is a significant difference in the teaching aptitude and teaching performance between the teachers with education and non-education degree groups. There is no significant difference in the teaching aptitude, verbal and non-verbal IQ, and teaching performance between male and female teachers. Finally, all the probationary teachers have significant, positive, but negligible correlation in teaching aptitude and teaching performance as well as the verbal IQ and teaching performance. On the other hand, their non-verbal IQ and teaching performance have a significant, negative, but low or slight correlation. The verbal and non-verbal communications of a teacher reveal his/her capacity in instructional performance, the teacher is a failure if his/her verbal and non-verbal skills are weak, thereby affecting the performance of the students. Secondly, the finding also affirms the general belief that teachers-applicants who are education graduates can perform better than the non-education graduates. Finally, teaching aptitude, verbal IQ and non-verbal IQ should be considered in hiring or rejecting teacher-applicants. The hired-teachers must receive the necessary amount of training to develop and enhance their potentials.
