Abstract: This study was conducted to determine the effect of Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) on the achievement of Grade IV pupils in Mathematics for School Year 2002-2003 at Makilala Central Elementary School. All the five sections of Grade IV pupils of Makilala Central Elementary School were the subject of the study. The pupils in each section were grouped into teams and given the same problems to be solved in a cooperative learning set-up. There were four least learned competencies that were taught to the five sections using the same strategy. The result of the National Diagnostic Test (NDT) which was conducted by the National Education Testing and Research Center (NETRC) in July 2, 2002 was used as pretest to 192 respondents. The study was conducted from January 17, 2003 to February 7, 2003 for a period of three (3) weeks to cover the third grading least learned competencies of Grade IV Mathematics based on the Basic Education Curriculum (BEC). An in-service training (INSET) was conducted as an intervention to upgrade the five (5) Grade IV teachers on how to use STAD as a strategy in teaching problem solving in Grade IV mathematics. A demonstration teaching was conducted by the five teachers handling the five sections of Grade IV as an application of the learning strategy in teaching the least learned competencies. It ended with a post-test using the same instrument as the pre-test. The result of the pre and posttest were compared, analyzed and interpreted using the t-test and resulted to a significant difference in the Mean scores of the pre test and posttest. The result of the posttest mean scores is higher than the pre-test. Based on the findings of the study it can be concluded that STAD strategy has improve the achievement of the pupils in Mathematics.
