Stress level and coping skills of the significant others

Abstract / Excerpt:

This paper is a research on the relationship of the level of stress experienced by the significant others of the patients who are mentally ill with the level of their coping skills in accordance with their demographic profile which are their age, sex and economic status. Several researches have been made about the stress that the significant others of these patients encounter and how they cope with the demands on care giving. To get the number of respondents for this study, convenience sampling technique was used. The computed population size of this study is 34. The respondents were the significant others of the mentally ill patients of the Out-patient Department and Crisis Intervention Unit of Institution X. Through the use of the statistical method, ANOVA, the researcher were able to determine the significant difference between the level of stress and coping skills of the significant others of mentally ill patients of Institution X. Age, sex and economic status were included as moderating variables in the study. After the data was treated carefully, the study revealed that the level of stress experienced by the significant others is low and that this level of stress have a significant relationship with the coping skills and 0.004 for problem-focused coping skills. However, age, sex, and economic status do not have a significant relationship with either the level of stress or level of coping skills. Based on the results, the study was able to formulate recommendations such as the implementation of programs by Institution X that can help in the financial and emotional needs of the families of individuals with mental illness. Other recommendations formulated are about being aware and being sensitive to the situation of people with mental illness as well as the stigma felt by their families.
