Status of Solid Waste Management and the incidence of Gastroenteritis

Abstract / Excerpt:

Arising quality of life and high rates of resource consumption patterns have had a unintended and negative impact on the urban environment - generation of wastes far beyond the handling capacities of urban governments and agencies. The primary intention of this study is to determine the relationship between the status of Solid Waste Management and the Incidence of Gastroenteritis in Barangay A and Barangay B. The researchers wanted to identify whether the means of discarding unwanted or unusable products followed by the respondents has something to do with the incidence of Gastroenteritis within their Barangay. The researchers used the comparative-correlation-descriptive method which establish cause-effect relationship between the identified sets of data In gathering the data, a self made questionnaire was created. The results of the data gathering revealed that the majority of the who acts as a housekeeper in their households are the mothers. The result showed that respondents coming from barangay B reuse the garbage, such as plastics and empty bottles, which they have collected. Another result is that there is a higher incidence of diarrhea cases in Barangay B compared to barangay A. With those results mentioned above, the researchers recommend that respondents especially those coming from Barangay B be informed of the high incidence of diarrhea in their area and be given with awareness programs regarding proper waste management and health concerns related to waste disposal.
