Abstract / Excerpt:
The study investigated the social networking sites (SNS) and its possible contribution on the identity formation of teenagers. A correlation research method was used and so it had determined the differences on the SNS and its relationship on the identity formation of teenagers. The respondents of this were students aging 16-19 years old of Ateneo de Davao University. The respondents were categorized by their school groups: School of Arts and Sciences (SAS), School of Education (SOE), School of Engineering and Architecture (SEA), School of Nursing (SON), and lastly, School of Business and Governance (SBG). Fifteen respondents per year level of each school group, a total of 300 respondents were randomly picked by the researchers. The study was conducted with the use of validated researcher-made questionnaire t determine the level of usage of SNS and identify formation of teenagers. It was found that there was no significant difference on the level of usage of SNS when analyzed according to year level and school and on the level of identity formation when analyzed according to year level. However, there was a significant difference on the level of identity formation when analyzed according to school. The findings of this study can benefit the teachers on how they can improve their teaching methods considering the digital age, parents on how to supervise their children's SNS activity, teenagers on their awareness about the possible effects of SNS on their identity formation and the future researchers on how they can develop and explore the significance of other factors affecting identity formation of teenagers.
