Abstract / Excerpt:
The study investigated the level of social media and the level of perception towards credibility of news of SAS Students in Ateneo de Davao University. A quantitative-correlation research method was used to determine the relationship between two variables. The study was conducted with the use of researcher-made questionnaire and had given the result that there is gratification on the leel of use of social media with regards to socializing, entertainment, self status seeking and information. In the matter of the level of perception towards the credibility of news, credibility was always believed to be deemed with the factors timeliness and frequently of updates, visual elements and numbers of followers/shares per post, on the other hand, it was showing less heed to source/author. Further results showed a significant difference on the level of use of social media when analyzed according to year level which revealed that the use of social media is favored by lower year students. When analyzed according to gander, results showed no significant difference which was contrary to previous studies. Furthermore, there was also a significant difference on the level of perception towards the credibility of the social media when analyzed according to year level which revealed that the level of perception towards credibility is favored by higher year level students. Moreover, it was found out that there has been no sognificant difference with regards to the perception of credibility when analyzed according to gender. On top of that, there was no correlation between the level of use of social media and the level of perception towards the credibility of news. Hence, proving the assumptions of Uses and Gratification Theory that social media is controlled by the audience and not otherwise. This is also supported by Social Credibility Theory in which credibility refers to personal belief and trust. The findings of this study can provide essential and remarkable inputs to the university professors and staff, university students, future researchers and news gatekeepers for a better insight, deeper community connection and a more effective news and information delivery and critical understanding.
