Abstract / Excerpt:

The exploitation of slang in campus is deemed improper since students are formally trained in language use. The use, abuse, and misuse of slang might lead to a formation of undesirable habit in communication. Teachers may encounter poor oral and written discourses among students who use slang. This paper aims to expose slang expressions used by college students in ACES Polytechnic College of Panabo City. The data collected for analysis were taken from five sessions of group discussions and three sessions using voice recorder, Bluetooth, and coding sheets. The study had drawn to the assumption of throne (2007) that slang expressions function as part of pure play: a stylistic choice employed to banter, to mock, and to josh. This study revealed that the existence of slang expressions is an integral part of language. Its existence in the academe is an area of sociolinguistics in which cognitive, social, aesthetic elements of human experience meet. Slang will stay as long as language exists.
